Miss Laverne was the organizational leader of the Jefferson 4-H Club for 48 years. She sercved from 1957 to present
in the 4-H Building at the Great Frederick Fair as a Department Superintendent. She loved to help children learn about
cooking and preserving food. Throughout her lifetime she taught numerous workshops for 4-H youth and judged at many county
fairs and communtiy shows. She was also an active member of the Frederick County 4-H All Stars and assisted with many
fundraising activites.
Laverne served on the steering committee to purchase land to build the Frederick County 4-H Camp was very special to
her. Using a 2-burner oil stove she along with others prepared food for the individuals cutting trees at the Camp and
Activities center site to begin building. Miss Laverne went on to serve as Kitchen Manager for the Camp Center from
1980 up until her time of death. Many people have enjoyed the home cooking she coordinated, prepare and had served at
the Camp Center.
In addition to her 4-H and Church activities Laverne was a member of the Jefferson Fire Company Ladies Auxillary,
Jefferson Homemakers, Frederick County Farm Bureau, Frederick Moose Club, and a member of the Amvets Auxillary Post.
She enjoyed going on bus trips helping with the Jefferson Ruritan and working at Hemps Meat at the fair. She was
an avid gardner something she carried through life from her birth on the farm.
At her 80th Birthday celebration it was noted in the program that Laverne and her brothers and sisters worked the
family farmland. They would go to
Washington, DC to sell eggs and other goods and ended up on the hood of the family pickup on occasion after being
chased around the block by an attacking dog. She states to this day, that is a reason she is not an animal person.
